We just heard a little about a fun new solo show starring a writer and perfomer named Adrian Villegas called "Six Mexicans Named Gonzalez." It seems Mr. V is alarmed at the common sterotypes that plague the Mexican-American populace, a sterotype that is reinfored by popular culture. In this show, Mr. V portrays six famous characters who each share the surname Gonzalez (we won't spoil the fun by listing them...but you know them all). In the process, he has quite a lot ot offer about prejudice, art and contemporary culture.
British comedian Dave Gorman scored a hit this past season with his hilariously inventive one-hander "Are You Dave Gorman," an account of his wacky and insightful quest to meet the other Dave Gormans in the world. And all reports are that it is quite an adventure.
The show opened last year in London and scored success at the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It was picked up by a NYC producer for a run this past fall. Gorman has since signed television production deals in both the UK and the US.
The Hartford Stage in Hartford, CT has just completed the premiere of a new solo show about the life and career of Katherine Hepburn. It's called "Tea at Five" and it stars Kate Mulgrew, perhaps best known for her portrayal of Captain Jane Hathaway in the last Star Trek series, "Star Trek Voyager."
Similar in structure to Steven Crossley's "Dickens in America," the new play by Matthew Lombardo and directed by John Tillinger, features Hepburn at her movie star prime in act one and as the aging dowager of film glamour in act two. Nancy Gallagher of the Hartford Civic Center called the show "fabulous." Tea at Five is expected to tour before it arrives in Broadway in the Autumn.
